Someone who might be very knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful\u2014but who, at the end of the day, is paid to sell you the products their company makes. Maybe they sell great windows, but what if your blueprint really calls for a skylight?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019ve been in this business a long time, and I can tell you that the entire financial world is split into those two camps. And frankly, the fact that the industry doesn\u2019t make this distinction crystal clear to the public is one of its greatest failings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Two Worlds of Financial Advice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most of the financial industry\u2014the big household names you see on TV\u2014operates in the salesperson&#8217;s world. Their representatives work for a broker-dealer and are held to something called the <strong>&#8220;suitability standard.&#8221;<\/strong> It means they only have to recommend products that are <em>suitable<\/em> for your situation. It doesn\u2019t have to be the best option. It doesn\u2019t have to be the lowest cost option. It just has to be\u2026 suitable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s a pretty low bar. It&#8217;s the standard that allows for high-commission products and conflicts of interest to be baked right into the business model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then there\u2019s the other world. The architect\u2019s world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this world, an advisor is legally and ethically bound to a much higher standard. It&#8217;s called the <strong>Fiduciary Standard.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A fiduciary has an undivided loyalty to you, the client. A fiduciary is <strong>required\u2014not just encouraged, but legally <em>required<\/em>\u2014to act in your absolute best interest<\/strong> at all times.
